During eye surgery, a tropical, local or general anesthesia is given to the patient. Adults are typically given a tropical and/or local anesthesia which blocks sensation to one area of the body but does not affect general consciousness. General anesthesia, which is more appropriate for children, puts the whole body “to sleep” and eliminates the possibility of movement.
The decision about what type of anesthesia that will be used will depend on the surgery being performed and the individual patient. The Marietta Eye Clinic has a great group of anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetist on staff who take great pride in taking care of our patients and making sure they have a pain free experience.
