About Dr. Wilkin

Dr. Justin Wilkin may be the youngest of six brothers, but don’t let that baby face fool you – the father of three is a skilled surgeon, specializing in cataract surgery. His surgical skills include state-of-the-art technology and procedures including certification for Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery on the Catalys laser.

“One thing I love about my job,” Dr. Wilkin says, “is that I can improve a person’s vision dramatically with a 10 to 15 minute surgery. Patients are extremely appreciative at the improvement in their vision and quality of their life after surgery.”

Dr. Wilkin says he discovered his passion of ophthalmology during his clinical studies in medical school, where he became fascinated by the complexity of the eye and its relationship to the overall health of the patient. “It is fascinating to discover and treat systemic medical issues such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease through looking into someone’s eyes.”

He is – there’s no other way to describe it – positively giddy when discussing ongoing discoveries about the eye and developments in ophthalmological technology. “With all the really cool technology we have – it makes what I do so exciting,” he beams. “It’s very hands on & very technically challenging.”

Despite his enthusiasm and glowing resume, Dr. Wilkin says he did not know he wanted to be a surgeon until an unfortunate accident lead to a fortunate encounter.

“I was in a bicycle accident, and I put my arm through a store window. I had to have emergency surgery,” Dr. Wilkin recalls. “Fortunately Dr. Gary Lourie, a hand specialist, saved my hand functioning, and I can operate. He was very important for my decision to go into medicine.” Dr. Wilkin’s sports injury shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to his patients. Dr. Wilkin is the consummate athlete and outdoorsman. Growing up, he played the trumpet (“I was a band nerd.”), played basketball and took Tae Kwon Do – a hobby, he says, that helped him defend himself “from those attacking the band nerds.”

Today, Dr. Wilkin loves to hike, mountain bike, hunt (with a bow and arrow!), fish (ask him about his 44-inch striper: “I have the pictures to prove it!”) and is an Eagle Scout and Scout Leader. As one might expect, the first merit badges he earned were for Medicine and First Aid. When he isn’t saving patients’ sight, Dr. Wilkin is active in his church, and enjoys spending time with his wife and three young sons, to whom he hopes to pass along family values.

“One of the things that helped me a lot was my mission trip to Argentina where I got to help people who were really a lot less fortunate than we are in America. People lived in homes that were made from scrap,” Dr. Wilkin recalls. “To see that really made me appreciate the things that I have. I hope my sons get to experience something like that where they give of their time and learn to appreciate the basics of life and the things we take for granted.”
