If you are over age 40, you may have already figured out that you need a different eyeglass prescription for distance
and near. Or, if you are nearsighted, you may find that you need glasses for distance but can take them off for close
vision. This condition, called "presbyopia" begins in your 40's and is inevitable, happening to everyone. Unfortunately,
due to your age, LASIK cannot give you both good distance and good near vision in the same eye.
If you are presbyopic and considering LASIK, you have two possible options. Both eyes can be corrected to give you
good distance vision but you will need drugstore reading glasses for near vision. Or, it is possible to correct one
eye for distance and leave the other eye slightly nearsighted for reading. This technique, called "monovision" or
"blended vision" may give people over age 40 the best chance to eliminate all corrective eyewear. Many contact lens
wearers employ this technique to avoid wearing reading glasses over their lenses.
If you have successfully worn monovision contact lenses, monovision LASIK will probably be a good option for you. If
you have not tried this with contact lenses but are interested in monovision, we recommend a free trial of monovision
contact lenses before you have LASIK to help you determine if this will work for you.
