The amount of reshaping of your cornea that is needed is based on the results of thousands of previous patients
with the same eyeglass prescription as you. However, everyone heals a little bit differently. That is the unknown
variable. Therefore, up to 5% of patients may not achieve their best visual result with the first laser procedure.
These patients may require a small "touch-up" procedure called an enhancement several months after the initial lasik
to further reshape the cornea and fine tune the vision.
During an enhancement, the original flap is gently lifted and a small amount of additional laser energy is applied
to the underlying cornea. Then the flap is replaced. If an enhancement procedure is needed, it is usually obvious
by the 3 month postoperative visit. Beyond this point in time, it would be rare for the vision to change. Enhancement
procedures will be done at no additional charge during the first 12 months after the initial LASIK procedure.
