From tinkering with antique clocks to creating handmade silver jewelry, Dr. Geoffrey Posner is a man of many interests. When not seeing patients, he might be found hiking in the woods, improving the landscape around his home or caring for the Japanese Koi in his backyard pond.
“I find many different things interest me,” he says, “and I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands. I like the contrast of using my hands in a precise and delicate manner while at work and then working in my yard when I get home.”
Dr. Posner was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He received his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and attended medical school at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in New York City from which he graduated in 1968.
“I’ve always been interested in the sciences and entered college thinking I would become a veterinarian, but the more I got into my studies, the more interest I had in a career in medicine. “Besides, I wanted to do something worthwhile for society, an ethic that was strongly instilled in me by my parents.”
Dr. Posner went on to complete his internship and residency training at the University of Southern California where he worked at the Los Angeles County Hospital. “It was there, during my internship year that I took a rotation in ophthalmology. I quickly realized that this is what I wanted to do. 9e precision of eye surgery appealed to me. In the office, I could see signs of systemic diseases in the eyes of my patients which was quite fascinating.”
He finished his ophthalmology training during the Vietnam War and served as a physician in the Navy. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA where he treated servicemen and their families at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. It was there where a few friends from the South convinced him and his wife to move to Atlanta.
Eventually Dr. Posner did relocate to Georgia and began his practice here in 1974. He has been with the Marietta Eye Clinic since 1997.

The father of four sons, Dr. Posner smiles as he tells of spending many weekends alongside his wife watching their sons play soccer and baseball, or going camping with them. He now has eight grandchildren.
“Five of them are girls,” he adds. “Now we spend our weekends going to dance and music recitals. They can get Grandpa to do almost anything.”
When relaxing with his wife, a docent at the High Museum and Carlos Museum on the Emory Campus, Dr. Posner likes to travel.
“My wife was an art history major so we stop at local museums whenever we’re visiting new cities.”

Additionally, together they enjoy the theater, symphony and opera, and have been members of a couples’ book club for more than twenty years, reading all genres of literature.
““Putting all my interests aside, I try to be a good person, to live by the Golden Rule. It’s a good way to live, I believe.”
